Our Waka

Kia ora koutou!

In Elliott Class, we have been learning about the history of New Zealand and how the first people came to be here. We looked at the mode of transport they used, the waka hourua, and built our own versions of these. We did a floating and sinking science experiment first to see which materials would be the best to use. From this, we designed and built our waka using the materials that floated.

Here are some photos of us testing our finished waka. We were so excited to see that all of them floated!

Corban’s Art Centre Trip

Kia ora Bloggers,

We were lucky enough to visit the Corban’s Art Centre this term where we learnt all about the Māori creation story and Matariki. From this learning we designed and made Matariki poi. Take a look at the photos below of the process we followed.

Samoan Language Week

Talofa lava!

Earlier this term we celebrated Samoan Language Week. We learnt some basic Samoan words and phrases, and tried to use these every day during learning time. We also learnt about the significance of the turtle in Samoan culture and art, and focussed an art lesson around this learning. Check out some of our finished turtles below! 🙂

ANZAC Day

Kia ora world!

Thank you for taking the time to check in and read our very first blog post.

This term has been very busy already. We kicked it off with some learning about ANZAC Day and completed this little unit of work with some artwork. We used different coloured pieces of paper to create the sunset backgrounds and practised out scissor skills by cutting out silhouettes of soldiers. Check out a few of our finished artworks below.
